컴퓨터(영어: computer, 문화어: 콤퓨터)는 수식이나 논리적 언어로 표현된 계산을 수행하거나 작업을 통제하는 기계다.
사전에서 찾을 수 있는 위와 같은 정의는 정확하지만 가리키는 범위가 너무 넓어 이전의 컴퓨터와 현재의 컴퓨터 그리고 미래의 컴퓨터를 정확하게 설명하기는 어렵다.
파스칼은 세무사였던 아버지의 작업을 돕기 위해 덧셈과 뺄셈을 자동으로 수행하는 기계식 계산기를 고안했다. 1950년대 초에 '컴퓨팅 머신'(Computing Machine)이라는 말이 전산기를 지시하기 위해서 쓰였다.
