- 조공(朝貢)은 한 집단이 다른 집단에게 예물을 바치는 행위를 말하며 역사적으로 국력이 약한 나라가 강한 나라에게 군사적, 정치적 목적을 가지고 예물을 바친 행위를 일컫는다. 특히 아시아에서 중국의 역대왕조를 대상으로 빈번하게 일어났다.
- 조공은 일종의 정치적 지배수단으로 해석되기도 하며 동아시아에서는 무역의 수단으로 이용되기도 하였다. 일반적으로 종주국과 종속국 관계로 해석하기 쉬우나, 제국과 제후국, 대등한 국가대 국가의 관계에서도 일어났다.
