탐정(Detective, 探偵)은 의뢰자의 요청에 따라 사건, 사고, 정보 등을 조사하는 민간 조사원을 뜻하는 말이다. 추리 소설 등에서는 사립 탐정, 사설 탐정 등으로 불린다.
정부에 검사가 있는 반면, 민간에는 변호사가 있고, 정부에 경찰이나 수사관이 있는 반면, 민간에는 탐정이 있다. 한국에는 변호사는 취득하기가 매우 힘든 국가자격증을 필요로 하지만, 탐정은 국가자격증이 없으며, 탐정이란 명칭도 사용할 수 없다.
