- 체스(chess)는 가로와 세로가 각각 8줄씩 64칸으로 격자로 배열 된 체스보드에서 두 명의 플레이어가 피스들을 규칙에 따라 움직여 싸우는 보드 게임이다. 세계에서 가장 대중적인 게임 중 하나이다.
- 플레이어는 킹 1개, 퀸 1개, 룩 2개, 나이트와 비숍 그리고 폰 8개로 총 16개의 피스를 가지고 시작하고 피스 6개는 각각 다르게 이동한다. 피스는 상대의 피스를 공격하는데 사용되고 게임의 목적은 상대의 킹을 체크메이트하는 것이다.
- 20세기 후반 이후 컴퓨터가 체스를 할 수 있도록 프로그래밍하였고 PC가 매우 높은 수준에서 체스를 플레이 할 수 있는 지점까지 왔다. 인간 플레이어에 의해 컴퓨터 분석과 체스 이론과 특히 엔드게임에 크게 기여하였다.
